The wines from Waipara West are made by award-winning winemaker Robert Rowe who is rather Old World in his philosophy, preferring to craft wines that speak of the terroir. With low yields the hand-picked grapes offer wines of natural intensity and structure which all display the potential to evolve beautifully over a number of years.
One major incentive to include these wines on a list is the number of awards they have been showered with over the years, both locally and internationally. The vineyard continues to be recognised as one of the very best estates in New Zealand. Wines of this quality are hard to find and as such Waipara West provides tremendous value for money.
Waipara Sauvignon Blanc 2008
The 2008 Sauvignon Blanc displays hints of passion fruit and ripe tropical aromas on the nose, slight sweetness of fruit on the front palate leading to a balanced structure with lingering finish.
This wine is ready to be enjoyed as a young wine or into the future if carefully cellared.
Waipara Chardonnay 2006
The 2006 Chardonnay is a light golden colour. The aroma is a heady blend of fruit, oak and creamy yeast, with hints hazelnuts and butterscotch.
The palate begins with a slight sweetness, layered across a mineral mid palate, followed by good balance of acidity with a lingering oak finish.
Waipara Riesling 2008
The wine displays a sweet floral scented aroma on the nose. The palate is minerally, mouth filling and balanced, with an oily texture and a persistent dry finish.
It is ready for consumption now but will further develop with cellaring.
Waipara Pinot Noir 2004
The 2004 Pinot Noir displays sweet plum fruit aromas with hints of spicy oak and firm acidity on the finish.
A light, delicate wine that reflects the 2005 season, the wine has potential to develop complexity with careful cellaring.
