An old bodega occupying over 200 hectares of prime vineyards in Alfaro, Rioja, Burgo Viejo has an enviable reputation for making first class wines in the traditional Rioja style. Wine has been crafted at this bodega for six generations and, whilst the winemaking facilities are ultra-modern, the wines remain true to their venerable heritage. The use of oak is evident but not intrusively overt; the fruit characteristics are gracefully complemented by the soft vanilla oak to produce balanced and complex wines.
The entry level wines from this winery represent outstanding value, being simultaneously highly approachable and full of appealing character. Sales of rose continue to flourish in the UK and for this reason the Rosado is worthy of serious consideration for inclusion on any wine list as it is a delightfully refreshing wine bursting with fresh red cherry flavours.
Rioja Joven 2009
An intense ruby colour with violet tones, the wine shows brightly in the glass and the elegant aroma of licquorice combined with wild berries adds to the initial appeal.
A soft, velvety mouth feel gives way to a pleasing finish with the fruit flavours showing well.
Rioja Blanco 2009
Viura 100%
A bright pale straw-yellow colour, with fresh green apple, hay and peach flavours and a nutty character.
Enjoy it with fish and seafood.
Rioja Rosado 2009
The nose of this gorgeously fragrant rose offers a blend of strawberry and bright pear backed by watermelon notes.
The palate continues with tangy pear and apple accented by citrus and hints of strawberry. Bright acidity, measured alcohol and a hint of minerality make for a crisp, dry mouthfeel and lighter body.
Rioja Crianza 2006
Burgo Vieja's Crianza is made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano and fermented in stainless steel before a 12 months stand in American oak barrels and a subsequent stand once bottled.
Superbly balanced wine, with the soft vanilla notes that drinkers of these wines enjoy.
Rioja Reserva 2001
Tempranillo 80%, Graciano 10%, Mazuelo 10%.
Fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperatures after skin maceration, followed by a 12 months stand in a new American (50%) and French (50%) oak barrel and subsequent stand once bottled.
Rioja Gran Reserva 2000
Tempranillo 100%
Fermented in stainless steel warehouses at controlled temperature, after skin maceration followed by a 24 months stand in a French oak barrel and a subsequent stand of at least 36 months once bottled.
Has significant ageing potential but also drinking well now.
